In this video, I break down a recent 1v1 ranked match that I had vs a English player on the ranked ladder in Age of Empires IV. I’m currently a Gold III player at the time of this recording.
I was playing as the House of Lancaster during this game. The purpose of this video is to analyze my gameplay. Take a look at the pros, cons and ultimately evaluate ways to improve. Feel free to like, follow, share, subscribe and comment below!
After watching my gameplay, feel free to check out the detailed stats below!
At this point, I feel like every other ranked game is against English.
Seriously.
Queue into ranked… English.
Try a different strategy… English.
Want a relaxing game? Nope—more Longbowmen.
This match was a House of Lancaster vs English 1v1 ranked game, and honestly, it felt like the perfect example of why so many average players struggle against English opponents.
I’m not a top-ranked player. I’m still learning the game, still improving, and still making plenty of mistakes. But after playing this matchup over and over, I’m starting to realize something important:
It’s not just that English is strong—it’s that they punish mistakes extremely hard.
And as an improving player… I make a lot of mistakes.
Why So Many Players Use English
There’s a reason English is one of the most common civilizations in ranked.
The civilization is:
- Easy to learn
- Strong defensively
- Dangerous early with Longbowmen
- Forgiving for newer players
English players can apply pressure quickly while still staying relatively safe at home.
That combination makes them extremely popular on the ladder.
And honestly? I understand why.
Why Longbow Pressure Feels So Difficult
The biggest problem in this matchup is usually the same thing:
Longbowmen pressure.
English players can mass Longbowmen very quickly through the Council Hall landmark, allowing early Feudal pressure that’s difficult to deal with.
And when you’re an average player trying to multitask:
- Defending your economy
- Managing villagers
- Producing units
- Scouting
…it gets overwhelming fast.
That’s exactly what happened to me in this game.
What Makes House of Lancaster Different
The House of Lancaster is technically connected to English, but the playstyle feels very different.
Lancaster focuses heavily on:
- Economy through Manors
- Defensive scaling
- Strong long-term value
On paper, this sounds good against English aggression.
But there’s a catch:
If your macro slips under pressure, your advantage disappears.
And mine definitely slipped.
Early Game (0–8 Minutes) – Panic Mode Activated
The moment I saw early pressure coming, I started making mistakes.
What Went Wrong
- Poor scouting
- Delayed production
- Resource floating
- Overreacting to every Longbow movement
Instead of calmly defending, I started panicking.
And panic creates even more mistakes.
The Problem With Facing English Too Often
I think a lot of ranked players feel this way:
When you face English constantly, you start expecting aggression every game.
That changes how you play.
Sometimes I:
- Overprepare defensively
- Delay my economy
- Play scared before anything even happens
And honestly, that mindset alone can lose games.
What I’m Learning About Countering English
I’m still improving, but here’s what I’m slowly starting to understand:
1. Stay Calm Against Early Pressure
You’re not automatically losing because Longbows showed up.
A lot of players online repeat the same advice:
Stay calm and minimize villager losses.
That sounds simple—but in ranked games, it’s harder than it sounds.
2. Scout Earlier
Most of my bad reactions happen because I don’t know what’s coming.
Better scouting would solve half my problems.
3. Don’t Abandon Macro
This is the biggest one.
Every time I panic:
- Villager production stops
- Resources pile up
- My economy falls apart
And then the game slowly slips away.
Mid Game (8–16 Minutes) – Where the Match Really Changed
This was the point where I realized I had no clear direction anymore.
I was:
- Defending randomly
- Taking awkward fights
- Producing units without a plan
Meanwhile, my opponent kept applying pressure consistently.
And consistency matters more than flashy plays.
Why Average Players Struggle Against English
I honestly think English punishes average players more than strong players.
Why?
Because average players:
- Panic more
- Struggle with multitasking
- Lose focus under pressure
- Make inefficient decisions
English forces you to stay organized while under attack.
That’s difficult when you’re still learning.
The Biggest Lesson From This Match
This game taught me something important:
I lose more games to panic than to strategy.
That’s the real issue.
Not Longbowmen.
Not balance.
Not matchmaking.
My decision-making gets worse once pressure starts.
And until I improve that, I’ll keep struggling in these matchups.
What I’m Trying to Improve Moving Forward
If you’re an average ranked player like me, here’s what I’m focusing on after this game:
1. Cleaner Early Build Orders
Less improvising. More consistency.
2. Better Scouting Habits
Information prevents panic.
3. Stable Macro During Pressure
The game doesn’t stop just because units arrive.
4. Stop Assuming I’m Losing
Sometimes I mentally lose before the game is actually over.
That’s a huge problem.
Final Thoughts: Maybe Facing English Constantly Is Actually Helpful
As frustrating as these games can be, they do teach important skills:
- Defending pressure
- Staying calm
- Macro under stress
- Decision-making under pressure
And honestly?
Those are skills I clearly need to improve.
So maybe constantly facing English players isn’t the worst thing in the world.
Even if it definitely feels like it sometimes.
