In this video, I break down a recent 1v1 ranked match that I had vs a Gold III Macedonian Dynasty player on the ranked ladder in Age of Empires IV. I’m currently a Gold II player at the time of this recording.

I was playing as the Ottomans during this game. The purpose of this video is to analyze my gameplay. Take a look at the pros, cons and ultimately evaluate ways to improve. Feel free to like, follow, share, subscribe and comment below!

After watching my gameplay, feel free to check out the detailed stats below!

The moment I saw the matchup loading screen, I already knew this game was going to get weird.

On one side:

The Ottomans — aggressive, military-focused, and built around nonstop pressure.

On the other:

The Macedonian Dynasty — a newer civilization with Varangian warriors, Silver mechanics, and enough unique units to make me question what half the army was actually doing.

This was an Ottoman vs Macedonian Dynasty 1v1 ranked game, and honestly, it felt like one of those matches where I spent half the game trying to survive and the other half trying to understand what my opponent’s civilization even did.

I’m not a pro player. I’m still learning ranked, still figuring out matchups, and still making plenty of mistakes. But games like this are useful because they expose weaknesses fast—especially when you face civilizations you don’t fully understand yet.

And this matchup definitely exposed mine.

Why Ottoman Feels So Strong in Ranked

The Ottoman civilization is built around military momentum.

They benefit from:

  • Military Schools producing free units
  • Faster military production
  • Strong pressure throughout the game

The entire civilization rewards aggression and constant tempo.

Which honestly fits my playstyle better because when I slow down too much, my decision-making gets worse.

The problem is…

Aggression only works if your macro stays stable.

Mine didn’t.

What Makes Macedonian Dynasty So Confusing

The Macedonian Dynasty feels very different compared to most civilizations in Age of Empires IV.

They have:

  • A unique Silver resource system
  • Varangian-focused infantry and cavalry
  • Special upgrades tied to Silver spending
  • Warcamps that reinforce lost units

And honestly?

As an average player, it’s hard to immediately understand what their real win condition is.

That uncertainty alone creates problems.

Because when I don’t understand a civilization well:

  • I scout less efficiently
  • I react emotionally
  • I make bad assumptions

That happened a lot in this game.

Early Game (0–8 Minutes) – Big Ottoman Energy, Small Brain Decisions

The early game actually started well for me.

I was:

  • Producing units consistently
  • Applying pressure
  • Trying to keep momentum

But then I started overthinking every Macedonian unit I saw.

My Biggest Mistake

Instead of sticking to my own strategy, I became too focused on reacting to theirs.

And when that happens:

  • Macro slips
  • Resource spending gets sloppy
  • Decision-making becomes chaotic

That’s exactly what happened here.

Ottoman Pressure Feels Amazing… Until You Mismanage It

One thing I love about Ottomans is how aggressive they feel.

Military Schools constantly producing units creates pressure naturally.

But there’s also a trap:

Free units can make you think you’re stronger than you actually are.

I started taking fights I probably shouldn’t have taken simply because I felt like I had momentum.

That confidence quickly turned into bad engagements.

Mid Game (8–16 Minutes) – The Match Became Absolute Chaos

This is where everything got messy.

What Went Wrong

  • Poor scouting
  • Floating resources
  • Panic-producing units
  • Constantly changing army composition

I stopped playing proactively.

Instead, I started reacting to every new Macedonian unit like it was some kind of emergency.

And honestly, newer civilizations can feel overwhelming when you’re still learning matchups.

Why Matchup Knowledge Matters So Much

One thing I’m realizing as I climb ranked:

A lot of games are lost before the fights even happen.

Not because of balance.
Not because of mechanics.

Because of uncertainty.

When I don’t fully understand a civilization:

  • I hesitate
  • I overreact
  • I stop following a real game plan

And against civilizations like Macedonian Dynasty, that uncertainty becomes dangerous fast.

Some players online have even described the civ as difficult to fully understand at first because of all the unique mechanics tied to Silver and Varangian units.

That definitely felt true in this game.

The Biggest Lesson This Match Taught Me

This game reminded me that:

Panic creates more problems than the opponent usually does.

The Macedonian player had strong units and solid pressure.

But honestly?

A lot of my losses came from my own reactions.

That’s actually encouraging in a weird way because it means improvement is possible.

What I’m Trying to Improve Moving Forward

If you’re also an average ranked player trying to get better, here’s what I’m personally focusing on after this game:

1. Stick to My Own Game Plan

Not every unfamiliar unit requires a panic response.

2. Scout More Consistently

Missing information creates unnecessary fear.

3. Stop Changing Unit Compositions Constantly

Every panic switch slows down momentum.

4. Keep My Macro Stable During Pressure

Aggression means nothing if my economy collapses.

The Honest Truth About This Match

This wasn’t some clean, professional-level game.

This was:

  • Confusion
  • Pressure
  • Overreactions
  • Chaos
  • And a lot of learning moments

Which honestly describes most ranked games for average players trying to improve.

Final Thoughts: Maybe “Big Ottoman Energy” Isn’t Always Enough

Ottomans can feel incredibly strong when momentum is working.

But this match reminded me:

  • Aggression without control becomes chaos
  • Pressure without macro falls apart
  • Confidence without scouting creates mistakes

I’m still learning all of that one ranked game at a time.

And honestly?

That’s what makes these matches fun—even when they’re messy.
