In this video, I break down a recent 1v1 ranked match that I had vs a English player on the ranked ladder in Age of Empires IV. I’m currently a Gold I player at the time of this recording.
I was playing as the House of Lancaster during this game. The purpose of this video is to analyze my gameplay. Take a look at the pros, cons and ultimately evaluate ways to improve. Feel free to like, follow, share, subscribe and comment below!
After watching my gameplay, feel free to check out the detailed stats below!
Whenever I get matched against a Platinum player in ranked, I already know one thing:
I’m about to get tested.
This was a House of Lancaster vs English 1v1 ranked match, and honestly, it felt like the perfect example of the difference between a Gold player and a Platinum player in Age of Empires IV.
Not necessarily mechanics.
Not crazy micro.
Not flashy strategies.
Just… cleaner gameplay.
I’m still an average player trying to improve. I make mistakes constantly, panic under pressure sometimes, and still struggle with consistency. But games like this are useful because they show exactly what better players are doing differently.
And usually?
It’s the small things.
Why English Is So Difficult to Face in Ranked
There’s a reason English remains one of the most common civilizations on the ladder.
They have:
- Strong Longbow pressure
- Easy defensive setups
- Reliable economy
- Straightforward game plans
For improving players, that combination is difficult to deal with because English forces you to multitask early and stay organized under pressure.
And if you fall behind even slightly, it snowballs fast.
What Makes House of Lancaster Strong
The House of Lancaster focuses heavily on:
- Manor-based economy scaling
- Defensive stability
- Strong late-game military options
In theory, that sounds perfect against English aggression.
But theory and ranked games are two completely different things.
Because surviving pressure while maintaining macro is much harder than it sounds.
Early Game (0–8 Minutes) – The Skill Difference Was Obvious
The biggest thing I noticed immediately wasn’t mechanics.
It was efficiency.
The Platinum player:
- Scouted consistently
- Applied pressure without overcommitting
- Kept production running
- Stayed calm the entire time
Meanwhile, I was:
- Reacting late
- Floating resources
- Missing scouting information
- Making emotional decisions
That’s the difference.
Not some insane strategy.
Just cleaner fundamentals.
The Biggest Mistake I Made: Respecting the Rank Too Much
The moment I saw Platinum rank, I started second-guessing everything.
And honestly?
I think that hurt me more than the gameplay itself.
I played:
- More passive
- More nervous
- Less confident
Instead of focusing on my own game plan, I kept thinking:
“They’re probably better than me anyway.”
That mindset is dangerous in ranked.
Why Platinum Players Feel So Hard to Beat
After this match, I started realizing something important:
Platinum players don’t necessarily destroy you with one big play.
They slowly outplay you over time.
They:
- Waste fewer resources
- Idle Town Centers less
- Scout more consistently
- Punish mistakes faster
And as a Gold player, those small differences add up quickly.
Mid Game (8–16 Minutes) – Where the Game Started Slipping Away
This is where I felt completely overwhelmed.
What Went Wrong
- I stopped scouting
- My macro became inconsistent
- I started panic-producing units
- My decision-making got messy
Instead of following a strategy, I was just reacting constantly.
Meanwhile, the English player kept applying steady pressure.
Not reckless pressure.
Not all-ins.
Just controlled pressure.
And honestly, that’s harder to deal with.
The Hard Truth About Ranked Improvement
I used to think climbing ranked was mostly about:
- Better micro
- Faster APM
- More aggressive plays
But after games like this, I’m realizing:
Ranked improvement is mostly about consistency.
The Platinum player wasn’t perfect.
They were just:
- More stable
- More organized
- Less chaotic
That’s it.
What I’m Trying to Improve After This Match
If you’re also an average player trying to climb ranked, here’s what I’m personally focusing on:
1. Stop Panicking Against Better Players
Rank doesn’t automatically win games.
2. Scout More Frequently
Most of my bad reactions came from missing information.
3. Keep My Economy Stable Under Pressure
If macro collapses, everything collapses.
4. Stick to One Game Plan
Changing strategies constantly creates mistakes.
The Biggest Lesson From This Game
The biggest difference between Gold and Platinum might honestly just be:
Platinum players make fewer unnecessary mistakes.
That’s what this game felt like.
Not unbeatable skill.
Not impossible mechanics.
Just cleaner execution over time.
And honestly?
That makes improvement feel more achievable.
Final Thoughts: Losing to Better Players Can Actually Help
Games like this are frustrating, but they’re also valuable.
Because they expose:
- Your weak habits
- Your panic decisions
- Your inconsistency
And if you’re willing to learn from those mistakes, that’s how ranked progress actually happens.
I’m still learning.
Still improving.
Still making plenty of bad decisions.
But matches like this remind me that improvement isn’t about becoming perfect overnight.
It’s about becoming slightly more consistent every game.
