How to Beat French as English in AoE4 — Bronze Tier Guide (Climbing the Ladder)

Alright, welcome to a brand new series I’m kicking off here: Climbing the Ladder.

Here’s the idea. I’m going to go matchup by matchup, rank by rank, and break down exactly how to win as one civ against another — starting at Bronze and working my way up through every tier I’ve actually reached myself. No further. I’m not going to sit here and pretend I know what Conqueror lobbies look like when I’ve never set foot in one. That’s not the kind of creator I want to be.

So this is real, rank-appropriate advice from someone who’s actually played at the rank you’re playing at right now.

First matchup in the series: English vs French, Bronze Tier.

If you’re sitting in Bronze and you keep losing to French players and have no idea why, this one’s for you.

Why This Matchup Trips People Up in Bronze

Here’s the thing about Bronze tier French players — they’re not doing anything fancy. Nobody in Bronze is executing a perfect timing push or microing their army like a tournament player. What’s actually happening is way simpler, and honestly kind of annoying once you see it:

French players in Bronze tend to lean on early aggression and cheap Feudal Age pressure because the civ practically begs you to do that. They’ve got cheaper Scouts, faster Feudal transitions in some builds, and access to early Royal Knights that hit way harder than most Bronze players know how to deal with.

So what happens? You’re sitting there building your English economy, feeling good about your farms, and suddenly there’s a pack of Knights in your base before you even hit Feudal Age yourself. That’s the Bronze French experience in a nutshell.

What to Expect From a Bronze French Opponent

At this rank, French players generally fall into one of two buckets:

Bucket 1 — The Early Knight Rush. They go Feudal fast, age up with the School of Cavalry, and send Knights at your villagers the moment they can. The School of Cavalry is one of their Feudal age up buildings and it acts as a stable.  There’s rarely a real plan behind it beyond “hit them before they’re ready.”

Bucket 2 — The Passive Economy Snowball. Less common in Bronze, but you’ll run into French players who just turtle up, build a strong econ, and slowly out-resource you into the late game without much early aggression at all.

Either way, scouting in the first few minutes tells you almost everything you need to know. If you see a School of Cavalry going up early and Scouts looking for exposed villagers, you’re dealing with Bucket 1. Prepare accordingly.

Your Counter-Strategy as English

English is actually one of the best civs to deal with this matchup, even at Bronze, because of one simple reason: your defensive tools are way ahead of what most Bronze players know how to punch through.

Here’s what I’d focus on.

Get your Town Centers fortified early. English villagers can garrison and your TC can shoot additional arrows once your villagers are inside. Most Bronze French players have no idea how to deal with a defended TC. Use that.

Don’t skip your Outpost. It sounds basic, but I cannot stress this enough — a single Outpost near your front-facing resources will completely shut down a lazy Knight rush. Bronze players rarely commit to actually sieging it down, they’ll just bounce off and go find easier targets.

Prioritize Spearmen & Longbowmen the moment you hit Feudal. This is your bread and butter. Spearmen are the direct counter to cavalry units. Additionally, enough Longbows can shred even Knights from range if you’re positioned even halfway decently. You don’t need perfect micro here — just don’t stand your archers directly next to the cavalry and you’ll be fine.

Keep producing villagers no matter what. I know that sounds obvious, but it’s the single biggest mistake I see (and have made myself) — panicking when Knights show up and stopping villager production to make army. Your economy is your real weapon in this matchup. Let your defenses buy you time, and keep growing.

If You’re Losing by Minute 10

Don’t panic. This is the part where a lot of Bronze games are lost not because of the opponent, but because of overreaction.

If French Knights are already in your base and you’re losing villagers, pull your vills toward your Town Center and garrison the ones in danger. Then mass whatever Spearmen and Longbows you have and force the fight near your TC, where you’ve got the arrow support.

Resist the urge to chase the Knights around your base. That’s exactly what they want — they’ll kite you, you’ll lose units chasing shadows, and your economy bleeds out while you’re distracted.

Key Things to Prioritize

  • Outpost near your most exposed resource line
  • Spearmen as your first real military investment
  • TC garrisoning and arrow upgrades — don’t sleep on this
  • Constant villager production, even under pressure
  • Scout early so you know which French player you’re dealing with

Rocco’s Quick Summary

Honestly, this matchup at Bronze comes down to one thing: don’t panic when the Knights show up. English has genuinely strong defensive tools baked into the civ identity, and most Bronze French players are relying on you not knowing how to use them. Wall up a little, get your Spearmen and Longbows out. Keep your villagers working, and you’ll find this matchup is way more winnable than it feels in the moment.

This is matchup one of many in the Climbing the Ladder series. I’ll keep working through English’s matchups in Bronze before moving up to Silver, so if this helped, stick around — there’s a lot more coming.

If you’re also grinding through Bronze right now and dealing with this exact French Knight nonsense, drop a comment below and let me know how it’s going. What civ are you maining? What’s been giving you the most trouble?

⚙️ What I Play On

If you’re grinding ranked and your setup is working against you, here’s the gear I personally use. No fluff — just what’s actually on my desk.

  • 🖱️ Mouse: TUF M4 Gaming Mouse — ASUS did a great job with this one. Precise, comfortable, and it’s held up well through a lot of AoE4 sessions.
  • ⌨️ Keyboard: RK-M75 Mechanical Keyboard — My first mechanical keyboard. It took some getting used to but I wouldn’t go back now.
  • 🖱️ Mouse Mat: Gaming Mouse Mat — Turns your whole desk into a gaming surface. Once you go full desk mat you won’t go back.
  • 🎧 Headset: Redragon Headset — Switched to this for my PC setup and the quality surprised me for the price.
